Eddie the Eagle

I only really started hearing about Taron Egerton from “Kingsman: The Secret Service” it was shortly after the movie’s release that we heard he will be starring in a biopic about Eddie the Eagle. I thought to myself “he does not look like Eddie, how will he pull this off?”, but with the right glasses, the right hair and a slight under bite, he certainly looks the part.

We see Eddie (Taron Egerton) from a young age; he is ambitious and dreams of, one day, becoming an Olympian. His Father gets sick of seeing him causing a nuisance, so forces Eddie to go to work as a plasterer with him. One of the places he was working was near a skiing centre, where Eddie is inspired and he decides that he wants to compete in the Winter Olympics. He trains in every winter sport, but fails to succeed in each one. Just before he gives up he discovers ski jumping. We see Eddie meet his trainer, Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), and the obstacles he overcomes to attempt to compete.

The movie was very light-hearted and held a very positive and uplifting vibe. The cheesy relationship between Eddie and Bronson and that feel-good feeling when you see Eddie make progress and start to accomplish his dreams made the movie shine; however it did feel a little bit too cliché. This is a biopic, so we always know what Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards achieved, but the story behind it, despite all the adorable elements, did feel recycled. However, saying that, the acting from both Egerton and Jackman was superb; the story was entertaining and is an all-round crowd pleaser.

Yes, there are a lot of cliché moments and characters in this movie, but sometimes cliché works, in this movie it did.
