Need For Speed

‘If you’re not in first place then you’re losing’ – that about sums up director Scott Waugh ethos towards the film adaption of EA’s Need for Speed racing game. So what all of this craving for acceleration about?

With inspirations drawn from cult car classics; Bullet, Gran Turismo and Smokey and the Bandit as Waugh mentions, the film is primarily based on the game concept - which leaves us with something quite desirable and quite fulfilling.

Need For Speed follows street racer, Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), who is fresh out of prison after being framed by his wealthy business associate (Dominic Cooper). He soon joins a cross country race with hell-bent revenge in mind. Learning of the plan, his ex-partner places a large bounty on his head as the race is scheduled to begin…

Inevitably it holds similarities with the Fast and Furious franchise, yet forcibly brings itself across as far tenser and almost believable! Although certain parts remain predictable, so just remember that it is based off a video game, so don’t expect an Inception level narrative. With all of that in mind however, it remains a hard-up fast thrill ride that kept us on the edge of seat... Or that could have been due to the small cinema chairs... either way it was an entertaining film!

Taking lead role is Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, who vs. Dominic Cooper sport some ace chemistry. (No, not science chemistry, bitches!) Not forgetting car chases, they are pretty key to the film – many of the sequences in fact have no CGI and large portions of stunts were done with Aaron and Dominic at the helm of the wheel. It pays off.

Alongside star Imogen Poots and Dakota Johnson, who both fulfil eye-candy as well as a bit of story. Imogen Poots as a side mention also co-stars with Aaron Paul in upcoming ‘A Long Way Down’, so expect some more onscreen chemistry. Shifting gears for just over 2 hours, the sound track and cinematography will keep your interested as a minimum.

Rating:  3 Star Rating
