The Hundred-Foot Journey

If Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey are attached to a film as producers it is a pretty good sign that it will be interesting. Obviously they have good taste.

The Hundred-Foot Journey, based on the book of the same title, follows the heart-warming tale of the Kadam family who migrated from India to the South of France to set up a restaurant. The perfect location is found, however it is one-hundred foot away from Madame Mallory’s (Helen Mirren) award winning French restaurant. The two cultures clash via their different cuisines and Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal), the passionate chef of Kadam family is caught right in the middle.

Starring; Helen Mirren, Manish Dayal, Om Pri and Charlotte Le Bon, the film is filled with exceptional performers- even Mirren’s French accent is not too quant. Directed by Lasse Hallström, best known for Dear John, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and Safe Haven. This film is no exception to his former work and is quite on par in terms of quality. Also noteworthy of mention, the film’s screenplay is by the Steven Knight, who is currently on top form in the industry.

The Hundred-Foot Journey is equally as passionate about the narrative of food as it is cultural differences. It entertains. Existentially the film touches on many other food cinema touchstones. As the film develops as does the chef rivalry throughout and echoes moments of Disney’s Ratatouille – minus the rodents of course!

Filmed much like an M&S advert, the film is elegantly crafted; lots of slow motion effects and a diverse score by A. R Rahman distincts the two cultures. Everything flows until the third act, where still applaudable holds, a much different style to the rest of the feature – almost as if this section was directed by somebody different to Hallström.

The Hundred-Foot Journey is light watching family entertainment that will make you hungry by the end. Our advice? Take food in with you.
