Welcome To The Punch

Having been mentored by the great Ridley Scott, director Eran Creevy makes his second directorial debut, past Shifty, with the British Cops N' Robbers flick - Welcome To The Punch.

The film sees ex-criminal Jacob Sternwood being forced to return to London when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives his long-time nemesis Max Lewinsky, one last chance to catch the man he is always after.

Starring James McAvoy, Mark Strong and noteably The Walking Dead's Governor - David Morrisely, the film is some-what unique in the presenting of it, almost like the tastes of American crime hits like Heat and L.A Confidential. Mimiking Dante Spinottii, cinematographer for Michael Mann's crime hits, the film is presented with a dark blue azure lit, giving it the darkness. Alongside this with the frequent skyline shots this shows director Eran Creevy's love for Hong Kong cinema.

With a small budget of only £5.6 million (small compared to the Hollywood hits, but large compared to my yearly salary.) The film still competes and delivers a top cast and superb set peices. One highlight of the film shows great tension and humour, one to be remembered for this years cinema journey.

Gaining a 15 Rating the film tosses around the violence and words effortlessly deeming this as a hard down British movie, just like The Sweeney was (but this is better). Like The Sweeney (2012), Punch sees director Eran Creevy pull apart parts of other crime films and add the same elements into his.. Having only a small running time of just an hour and a half the movie does not let up, and comparably gettings better towards the end of the film, making the audience leave the cinema with a sense of movie experience fulfilled.

Rating:  4 Star Rating
