'The Walking Dead' Season Four, Episode 11 - Review

*Contains Spoilers*

We got a glimpse of them last episode, but this was the true introduction to the trio: Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita. Abraham has been an anticipated character, especially since it was confirmed he’d appear before season four even began. He almost seems similar to Merle, minus the racism of course. Abraham defiantly appears to strong and has a good head on his shoulders. It also could have been hinted at a tragic past, we’ll see. Micheal Cudlitz fits the role perfectly. I’m very eager for him to run into Rick and/or Daryl. It would be interesting seeing how they’d mesh. Eugene is an intriguing character. First of all, he has a mullet. He is said to be a scientist, but he seems a bit shady. I’m not 100% sure how I feel about him yet. As for Rosita, we didn’t get enough from her to get a good enough understanding. It was said she was in love with Abraham, but I didn’t see that. Hopefully, more development comes her way before the season ends (if she lives).

Glenn wakes up in the back of truck and is none to happy. Luckily, Tara had been writing down the directions to get back to the spot where Glenn passed out. The bad news is that they passed it and the bus – where Maggie was last seen – drove around three hours passed that point. They forcibly get off the truck and are determined on walking back. Abraham, however, tries to stop them. In his attempts, two massive pieces of information were dropped. His mission is to travel to DC, and the reason is because Eugene is scientist who knows exactly what caused the walker plague. Supposedly, if they get to Washington a cure could be made. Glenn either doesn’t buy it, or simply does not care. Abraham then tells him Maggie is dead and looking for her is a lost cause. They get into a fight, but stop when walkers attack. Eugene accidentally damages the truck, so the trio follow Glenn and Tara to search for Maggie until they can find another car.

There are numerous relationships in The Walking Dead, one of the most interesting ones right now is the Michonne/Carl one. The groundwork was set in Clear, and season four has expanded on it. Michonne basically has become Carl’s best friend. The writers were able to establish this in numerous different ways – superb job on their part. Nothing big happened on the supply run. No obstacles or walkers, simply the two of them. For the first time, Michonne opened up to another person. She tells Carl she had a three year old son and that his name was Andre Anthony. Carl promises that her secret is safe with him. When she replies it isn’t truly a secret, he says it’s still safe with him. They have tons of moments like this throughout. Michonne even hides the horror she discovers in the house; a family dead in an apparent mercy murder-suicide. Michonne and Carl are an endearing pair. They both need each other, and serve as confidantes for one another.

The other two sections of the episode were great, but the best part was Rick and the intruders. These scenes had tension galore. As soon as it was set up for Rick to take it easy and rest, I knew something bad was going to happen (poor guy can never catch a break). He wakes up from his nap by the sound of people entering the house. The direction was flawless. I was on the edge of my seat every single moment (especially when he was hiding under the bed). The camera angles and score made me feel like I was experiencing what Rick was. The fight where Rick strangles someone in the bathroom was well choreographed and a different kind of fight than we’re used to seeing. Overall, it was nice to see Rick back in action again, this time on a stealth mission. It was a cool touch having him open the door to the bathroom knowing the dead guy would turn – smart move.

Andrew Lincoln doesn’t always get the respect he deserves. He’s consistently outstanding, easily one of the best actors on television. He does an amazing job of conveying emotion without saying a word. That whole sequence had other things going for it, but Andrew Lincoln’s acting feels so real it sells you on the fact that Rick is in serious danger. Claimed ends with them (Rick, Michonne, Carl) walking along the train tracks and them passing a sign advertising Sanctuary. Looks like they’ll most likely run into Tyreese’s group! That is by far my most eagerly anticipated reunion.

On a final note, I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of this group. They are set up to be really evil. Not similar to The Governor, but like pure scum of the earth. We heard them torturing someone from their own group, plus one almost killed another over a bed. If you listen closely there are talks of raping Michonne when she gets back. Also, that one guy saw Rick before passing out, I don’t think that was merely used for tension. The final piece of evidence is the man on the porch whistling is a fairly known actor; wouldn’t make sense for them to cast him for such a tiny part. I’m sure they’ll come back into play somehow.
