DreamWorks Planning a How to Train Your Dragon 4'?

How to Train Your Dragon was such a huge surprise. I wasn’t expecting much going into the theater back in 2010 (trailers, advertisements, and news weren’t doing it for me) – was simply blown away. I was hooked from Hiccup’s opening monolog, and it only got better from there; Hiccup and Toothless initial flight together… breathtaking. It was Pixar level quality, even surpassing their most recent outings. DreamWork’s Animation Head Jeffrey Katzenberg said that the franchise would end up being a trilogy back when How to Train Your Dragon was released.

Josh Powell, the films’ composer, talked about the idea of possibly a fourth film in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. Here’s what he told the folks over at Collider below:

“I saw Dean (the director) in Cannes, we had a premiere of the film there, and he was very merry and a bit drunk and he sort of knew about [How to Train Your Dragon] 3 and I think it was mentioned to him by Jeffrey that maybe they would do a 4. And that was definitely, I think, a real kind of eye-opener for Dean and for me because it’s like, ‘Hey I thought this was a trilogy?’ (laughs). So I don’t know, and it might be good because he’s got a lot of story left to tell, so maybe splitting it into two will work, but I just don’t know about that yet. I’m supposing that at the moment, Dean has an idea for the third one and he isn’t telling any of us yet.”

With the success of the first film being what it was, along with the extremely positive reviews for the sequel (certain critics have claimed it’s even superior than it’s predecessor), this news doesn’t come as a big shocker. I’m happy that DreamWork’s is planning to extend their franchise longer than their original plan. Personally, as long as the quality remains consistent, I won’t mind however many movies they choose to make. They’ve established a world, along with characters inhabiting it, that I really love. I have liked what John Powell and everyone else involved have had to say on this matter, so am desperately hoping they handle this well. I’ve eagerly awaited How to Train Your Dragon 2 ever since it’s been announced, and can’t wait to see it in theaters soon.

What do you think? Are you anticipating the sequels? Did you love the first? Let us know in the comments section below.
