We are used to seeing Robert De Niro playing a very dignified and distinguished character and Zac Efron playing a wild and adventurous character, but in Dirty Grandpa, they are playing the polar opposites of their usual roles. Sometimes when actors play many different characters, this can be a positive thing; we get to see the actor stretch themselves. Steve Carell, for example, has shown his successful acting ability in very serious roles and in very comedic roles. Unfortunately this did not work in the same way for De Niro and Efron in Dirty Grandpa.

Shortly before the uptight Jason Kelly (Zac Efron) marries Meredith (Julianne Hough) he is persuaded to drive his Grandfather, Dick Kelly (Robert De Niro), to Florida for Spring Break just after the funeral of Dick’s wife. On this trip, Dick explains to Jason how he wants to sleep with college girls and have the time of his life when Jason expected a couple of golfing sessions.

Full of obscene language and behaviour I left the cinema in a state of shock. I am scarred for life from some of the things I saw, but the problem for me was that the movie was supposed to be a comedy movie, but I only really found it funny because it was so shocking. In my opinion this was an awful comedy movie… and an awful movie in general. At one point there was a karaoke scene where Zac Efron’s character sings, in a very similar style to High School Musical.

It wasn’t that the cinematography was particularly bad. The acting was alright as well, for me it was the screenplay. It felt like it was written by a group of prepubescent boys. The message in the story was to live your life how you want to, not how someone else tells you to; to be more adventurous. Why that story needs to be littered with sex, drugs and nudity? I don’t know. In fact with the message they were telling, had this been a tame and more serious tale, I could be talking about it in a very positive light.

Littered with awkward comedy, unnecessary nudity and pointless, vile language, this comedy movie is unfunny and was a bitter disappointment.
